Cosy up your home for the cooler months…

The cooler months are upon us… time to light the fire (if you’re lucky enough to have one!), draw the curtains and wrap your cold hands around a warm mug of soup! For some of us here on the sunny coast, we are so used to the heat that winter can feel freezing (I know, we are so spoilt!). So we have had to master the art of creating a cosy home for the cooler months to help see us through to temperate weather again. Let us share our tips and tricks with you…

Our first port of call is to roll out the rugs. Underfloor heating is brilliant if you have it, but for those of us who don’t have this luxury and have hard surface flooring such as timber, tiles or concrete, we need to layer the floor with some textured rugs to keep our tootsies warm! We really do love natural fibres such as wool, cotton, bamboo silk – they feel so soft and delicious underfoot. Fibres such as jute and sisal are more textural yet still lovely and look great in a coastal home. Alternatives such as the indoor/outdoor rugs are a fabulous alternative for anyone with young kids and pets.

Try for some ambient lighting… there’s something so soothing about the ritual of walking through your home at dusk, turning on each lamp and creating that gentle, ambient lighting. It instantly softens and warms a space, creating that much desired feeling of cosiness that we are all chasing this time of year.

Fabrics and colour can play a big part in creating a cosy winter vibe and a great way to change out your soft furnishings & accessories seasonally. Shades of mustard, rust, olive green and warm peachy pink are all in the warm side of the colour wheel, while delicious cosy fibres such as wool, linen, felt and boucle are all very tactile and textural, a lovely way of adding texture to your home. Think scatter cushions, throw rugs, sheets and duvets – all an easy way to change things up for winter.

Get a cosy little nook set up where you can retreat to – even better if you can pick a spot that gets lots of natural light so that you can absorb any sunlight that may stream in. Perfect for a morning reading spot or an afternoon kip! Now for night time, don’t forget to draw the curtains to keep the warmth inside and enjoy getting your home winter ready!
