The Art of creating a beautifully simple space

When it comes to decorating your home, less is best for those who crave a simple space. Creating a beautifully balanced interior is an art form and requires consideration of many factors, so the best rule to follow is – keep it simple. Here are a few key factors to consider.

Choose a style and work within it – this doesn’t need to be a rigid rule, as an eclectic home can be gorgeous but takes work to curate and bring cohesion. Therefore, if you’re not super confident or you desire simplicity, try to keep to a particular style – coastal, contemporary, minimalist, Scandi – to name just a few.

If you have no idea what your style is, jump onto pinterest and get browsing. Once you start pinning, you’ll no doubt begin to see similarities in what you like and a style will begin to emerge.

Once you’re clear on your aesthetic, you can ensure the important pieces you have work within this theme and any future purchases will fuse nicely. There’s nothing worse than going on a shopping spree (big sales can be tempting!) only to realise you’ve not kept to your style and your new goodies don’t work in your scheme at all.

Consider your timber colours – aim to keep your timber tones in harmony with each other, so that they too work with your overall style. Again, this is essential to keep in mind when you go furniture shopping, as clashing timber tones or too many tones can really create disharmony and will make your home feel out of balance. On the flip side of that, not everything needs to be exactly the same and matchy-matchy! It’s all in the tones.

Don’t forget your colour scheme – again, simple is best for a minimalist interior. Neutrals are a perfect place to start and create a lovely canvas for you to work with. This will allow you to bring in your feature colours through accessories and artwork without any issues with clashing tones and spaces that overwhelm.

Let in the light – natural light is king here and will help create a fresh, simple space and hopefully allow good air circulation. Keep window furnishings to a minimum, nothing fussy or dusty, perhaps just a simple ceiling mounted sheer curtain or a roman blind if suitable for the space.

Curate your accessories and artwork – not everything needs to be displayed at once. Keep things simple and cohesive – items grouped together look best in uneven numbers (3 and 5). Colours and tones should work together, not fight for the spotlight. Changing over your accessories seasonally is also a great way to keep things fresh and interesting, while allowing time for your special pieces to shine, rather than sit hidden in a cupboard.

Keep the clutter at bay – hide your bits and bobs away. Unless it’s pretty + attractive, no one wants to see it! Utilise the storage you have or invest in attractive baskets to keep your essential everyday items out of sight.

Lastly and most importantly, bring joy + love into your home by only bringing in items you genuinely love. You can feel such a difference between a home that is full of ‘perfect’ items that fill a space and a home that is carefully curated yet full of meaningful and treasured pieces. Make your home a space you love coming ‘home’ to :)
